Thank you! For this one I used a regular living room lamp, which is kind of like this one: ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I… I layed it down sideways on a chair so that the top light was roughly on my eye level.
It depends on the photo. Here, you don't have a lot of obvious makeup on, so you are really depending on the pure simplicity of the image. Other photos I've seen have a lot of makeup on the model, with a lot of fancy work with the hair and outfit, so there it goes well.
One of the beauties of your portraits is that you strip away all of the externals and leave just YOU -- the person. That's one of the questions which art asks us: When you pull away the clothes, the makeup, the fancy hair, all the stuff we surround ourselves with, and we stand alone in the darkness, what are we left with? Is there anything left behind the "masks" we put on to impress other people?
